Role of Medical Laboratory Technicians

Medical Laboratory Technicians are important members of any clinical laboratory team. They collect fluid, tissue and blood samples to perform a variety of tests. They generally work under the supervision of a pathologist. Laboratory Technicians get employed in hospitals, diagnostic labs, blood banks, medical clinics, etc. Laboratory Technicians work within a team of medical professionals, each performing tasks essential to successful patient care.

In big hospitals, the starting salary may even go up-to Rs.15,000 or more.The salaries of MLTs increase with their number of years of experience within this field.

This is because of the fact that the soaring aging population is predicted to result in an increased requirement for diagnosing of medical conditions such as type 2 diabetes or cancer through laboratory procedures.
 

Eligibility and Growth Prospects

The eligibility criterion for pursuing an MLT course is 12th with Science from a recognized board. Medical Laboratory Technicians are able to make a significant impact on patient care, without having an actual interaction with patients.  With the necessary skills, MLTs can find employment in clinics, hospitals, doctor’s offices, blood bank centers, and private laboratories.MLTs can also grow to become Lab Technician, moving to Hematology Technician and Clinical Biochemistry Technician. Further, a Clinical Biochemistry Technician progresses to become a Microbiology Technician, Chief Laboratory Technician, and then Assistant Clinical Laboratory Manager. From there, he finally takes up the role of a Clinical Laboratory Manager, which is the most superior role within this field.
